Is Attack on Titan Overrated 2023

Is Attack on Titan Overrated? I started writing this post after watching the first 2 seasons of AOT in 2018. And it was obvious to me that it is one of those overhyped anime with an obsessed fanbase.

But I wanted my review to be fair and just. So thought it would be only right to at least watch the 3rd season of Attack on Titan before making up my mind about the show.

I don’t know if I am glad I did that or if I just caused myself so much pain and heartbreak

But I have to admit it, Attack on Titan is good.
GUYS this Anime is actually really really really good.

So, Is Attack on Titan overrated in 2023
No, it is not trust me I wanted to believe that it was, but once you get past the 2nd season you will understand what makes it special.

Now I am not saying that the first two seasons aren’t good, they are good. but it was only after season 2 that the anime set itself on a different level from the other animes out there.

What is Attack on Titan About?

The genius behind this anime is you can’t even give a simple answer to this simple question (without spoiling at least).

The Anime starts off simply then progresses with a different setup and story. But it happens smoothly and steadily supported by good writing and storytelling.

It is easy to see that the events were intended and planned from the start and it is not just a random process that leaves plot holes everywhere.

But to give an answer Attack on Titan is

AOT is a dark fantasy anime/ manga created by Hajime Isayama. The story is set in a world where humanity is on the brink of extinction due to the existence of Titans. These Titans prey on humans and to protect themselves humanity has built massive walls and lived inside them.

The plot revolves around Eren Yeager, who vows to kill all Titans. So he joins the military, becoming a member of the Survey Corps.

Why is AOT Worth Watching

If you were asking yourself if Attack on Titan is worth Watching Or should I watch AOT Let me tell you why it is:

The World-building

Attack on titan World

The hard work that Isayama had put into the Worldbuilding and setting of the anime’s theme did really pay off in the end. The way he detailed and explained how things are and how they are run did help us get deep into the story and bond with the characters from the get-go.

The anime introduces a meticulously crafted world with a rich history, diverse cultures, and a well-thought-out hierarchical society.

Writing and Storytelling

Although I do not know how AOT ends, everything till this point is really well written and thought out and it shows throughout the series.

The show currently has (88 episodes) the final episode is scheduled for later in 2023. None of the episodes are filler. And not one episode felt dull or pointless.

Each episode is filled with grabbing events, epic fights, cliffhangers, and plot twists.
This assures us that the anime is focused and it is headed straight to the point with no detours.

The Depth and Growth of Characters

Is AOT worth watching

Attack on Titan is a gore anime with a lot of violence, in this survival battle, a lot of characters will die. (this is your warning… don’t get too attached).

But the anime explored each character’s trauma, struggles, and motivations.
So that we got to feel and understand the emotions of the characters throughout their journey such as hope, fear, pain, desperation, desire, and courage.

The anime does not just focus on the main character and his development. The anime does an amazing job of building the supporting characters to be complex and relatable.

And it is no wonder that we will end up loving a supporting character more than the protagonist.

Now the problem with that, is the death of those characters will be heartbreaking. As Isayama refuses to provide any fan service or relief as every one of our favorite characters gets killed off from the show one by one.

Girl Power

AOT Girl Power

It is so refreshing to see the female lead of a shounen anime is actually strong and capable.

Mikasa Ackerman is portrayed as a strong character She possesses physical prowess, exceptional combat skills, and a fiercely protective nature.

Other than Mikasa AOT introduced other strong female characters such as
Hange Zoë
, as is passionate and intelligent. Sasha Blouse is a skilled archer and Annie Leonhart is one of the most skilled hand-to-hand combatants in the series.

Thought Provoking Plot

The least I can say about AOT is Thought Provoking
The anime is deeper than it may seem it wisely discusses complex ideas like:

Nature of Humanity

The anime raises questions about the nature of humanity between great heroism and pure cruelty.

It depicts how individuals and societies respond to extreme circumstances and the lengths they are willing to go to survive.

And how a change of perspective and point of view could change your whole understanding of something or someone.

Morality

The series presents a morally complex world where characters are faced with difficult choices that leave you lost in your own thoughts and make you question where you stand in the midst of all this.

At this point, everything is just Gray and I am torn between everything that is happening, I don’t know who I am rooting for. And I don’t know who is right and who is wrong.

Soundtrack and Music

I personally love all of AOT’s openings and endings.
Moreover, the anime has an iconic and powerful soundtrack composed by Hiroyuki Sawano.

The following are on repeat on my playlist:

  • Bauklotze: is a German song that was only featured twice in the anime and that was enough to be one of AOT’s most iconic OSTs. The song is used as background music during intense and climactic moments.
  • Barricades: carries a powerful and energetic melody that sets the tone for the intense and action-packed nature of the series. The song symbolizes the idea of standing firm and defending against threats.
  • Attack on Titan: Named after the show, it is a fantastic song that never fails to raise the tension of the show whenever it is played.
  • YouSeeBIGGIRL/T.T: It is a powerful and emotional track that is used during intense and pivotal moments in the show. The song combines elements of orchestral music, vocals, and electronic elements to create a haunting and impactful atmosphere.
