Farha Movie Review

Movie Info

Recommendation and Rating

Farha’s Netflix movie is set during the Nakba. the movie is based on a real-life tale of a 14-year-old girl (Radiyyeh), whose name has been changed to (Farha).

This movie is considered a war movie.
And the thing about war movies is they give you that sense of responsibility toward the stories they tell.
And that sense was 100 times stronger because this war is still ongoing. “Farha” is not a historical story, it is a continuous everyday tragedy for the Palestinians.

Farha is a must-watch movie.
Karam Taher who plays (Farha) did a fantastic job. She carried the whole movie with her eyes expressions.

What is the Meaning of “Farha”?

Before getting into anything, let me first put you into context. “Farha” is an Arabic word and its literal translation means Happiness and delight.

In this movie, Farha is the name of the main character. And I believe her parents gave her that name because they wanted it to influence her life so, that she would live a happy life. But little did they know, war was right about the corner.

Why the Name “Farha”?

Ms. Darin Sallam (writer and Director). said in an interview (in Arabic), that she chose the name Farha to refer to the stolen happiness of the Palestinians. the happiness of living in their land.

Farha movie review (Plot Summary):

Farha Movie Review

Farha is a 14-year-old girl who dreams of breaking the customs, by pursuing an education in the city (it was not something common for girls in that time period), but she was smart and she was eager to learn more. she even dreamed of becoming a teacher one day.

And just when her dream was within her grasp, and she thought she had it all. Everything including her dream was brutally crushed when the war reached her village.

As the events unfold, Farha finds herself in a pantry with a small window. locked in the pantry she experienced all sorts of terror. and (for her lack of luck), she got to be an eyewitness to a massacre.

Most powerful Scenes from the movie

As part of Farha Movie Review, I would like to shed light on those powerful scenes:
Now, this is your spoiler alert, continue reading at your own risk.

The country has fallen

This one is not actually a scene but the expression in itself was enough to send a chill down my spine.
When the invasion started and Farha got to her father, and he said the country has fallen, I felt it heavily in my heart.

The Lullaby, He finally went to sleep.

There is nothing I could write here that will give this scene its justice, you have to see it for yourself.

When I grow up I want to be….

This is a very simple sentence, all of us used it at some point in our lives. and we ask it to every kid we meet, but Farha and the people she represents were even denied that simple right, the right to dream, the right to grow old.

That important piece of Paper.

Farha held onto her school enrollment paper so dearly, that even when the war broke she made sure to have it with her. That piece of paper had her future and everything she dreamed of is in it.

Yet, we see her in the end when she finally gets out, She is holding a different paper. She is holding a memory from her best friend, whom she might never meet again.

The important paper was of the future, now it is a memory from the past, of the life she once had in the village.
