It’s Ok to Be Not Ok Review, Plot Summary

It’s Ok to Be Not Ok is a KDrama about two brothers, Moon Gang-tae (Played by Kim Soo-hyun) and his older brother, Moon Sang-tae (Played by Oh Jung-se).

It shows the struggles the younger brother has to go through while caring for his Autistic older brother. And how that has affected his personality, career, and relationships.

On top of being Autistic, the older brother (Moon Sang-tae) is traumatized after witnessing his mother’s death. which resulted in fear of butterflies, where he believes that they will attack and kill him as they did his mother.

Due to that the brothers are always on the move. At the first sight of any butterfly they will back and move, so they have never settled in one place.

While preparing to move, the brothers attend a book signing event for Mun-yeong (played by Seo Yea-ji), who is Sang-tae’s favorite children’s book author.

She and Gang-tae develop a romantic relationship. Now it goes without saying that she also has her own mental health issues and trauma.

As the story unfolds, they face various challenges and obstacles, including family secrets, childhood trauma, and societal expectations. But, through their struggles, they learn to embrace their flaws and imperfections and find the strength to move forward.

Overall, “It’s Ok to Be Not Ok” is a touching and powerful drama. that explores the complexities of mental health and the healing power of human connection. It highlights the importance of self-acceptance, forgiveness, and empathy.

Why is “It’s Ok to Be Not Ok” Worth Watching

It’s Ok to Be Not Ok is Worth Watching, as it stands out from other Korean dramas for several reasons:

The Performances

The actors did an excellent performance, especially (Kim Soo-hyun), and (Seo Ye-ji). who give their characters a sense of depth and complexity. The characters become more likable and compelling thanks to their on-screen chemistry and emotional range.

Unique Storyline

It is unusual for a Korean drama, as it combines elements of romance, comedy, and dark fairy tales with the exploration of mental health issues.

The Focus on Mental Health Issues

And doing so in a unique way, since all of the main characters suffer from mental health issues. Instead of just having one character with challenges.

So the drama highlights the struggles of mental health issues in a positive way that is companionate and empathetic. it also introduced a lot of issues such as autism, antisocial personality disorder, and PTSD.
It sheds light on the stigmas surrounding mental health and highlights the importance of seeking help and support.

The Use of Fairy Tales

Fairy Tale Stories it's ok to be not ok

The use of known tales with a twist to representation for the characters’ emotions gives the narrative a special and creative touch, which shows great depth in the story and the characters.

Some of my favorite Tales are

  • The Boy Who Fed on Nightmares:
reflects the character’s own traumatic past and struggles to overcome childhood fears.
  • The Zombie Kid:
Is a story of a mother who gave everything for her son. only to discover that it was not the physical stuff that mattered to him, her son was yearning for emotional contact.
  • The Boy Who Cried, Wolf:
this is the story we all know about the boy who lies about a wolf attacking his sheep. so the villagers stopped believing him. But what we did not understand about the story is that the boy was lying because he was lonely.

That was it for (it’s ok to be not ok review). I hope that was a fun read for you.
Thank you so much if you made it to the end; it means a lot to me.
